Brian Gazer y Ron Howard vuelven a colaborar como productores y se encuentran, según The Hollywood Reporter, a la caza de guionistas para una nueva adaptación de la novela de George Orwell 1984, que producirán a través de su compañía, Imagine Entertainment, y con el apoyo de la joven LBI Entertainment (responsable de Un Lugar para Soñar).
La historia de 1984 se desarrolla en una sociedad distópica en un permanente estado de guerra, que lleva a los dirigentes a vivir envueltos en una paranoia constante que se manifiesta en propaganda, vigilancia del ciudadano, control del pensamiento colectivo, culto a la personalidad… todos conceptos propios de los regímenes totalitarios. El protagonista, Winston Smith, trabaja para el gobierno en el denominado Ministerio de la Verdad, donde se alteran las noticias, pero alberga en secreto deseos de rebelión. La novela ha influido de una manera muy importante en la literatura, el arte y la manera de pensar de las generaciones que la han sucedido.
La última adaptación de la novela la dirigió, precisamente en 1984, Michael Radford (El Mercader de Venecia, Michel Petrucciani) y la protagonizaron John Hurt, Richard Burton (El Desafío de las Águilas, ¿Quién teme a Virginia Woolf?) y Suzanna Hamilton (Memorias de África, Diario de un Vampiro).
