En una entrevista concedida a Empire con motivo del estreno de Titanic 3D, el productor y compañero habitual de James Cameron, Jon Landau, ha dejado caer que Avatar 2 no llegará hasta 2015, como pronto.
«No queremos dar fechas, pero creo que 2014 sería una mala fecha para nosotros«, ha explicado el productor. «Queremos hacerla bien… Las películas condicionan las fechas de estreno; las fechas de estreno no deberían condicionar a las películas«.
Con este «retraso» Avatar 3 quedaría postergada hasta 2016 ó 2017. Esto es lo que ha declarado Landau con respecto al argumento de las secuelas de Avatar cuando se le ha preguntado por la idea de rodarlas a la vez:
«Aquí es donde las películas fallan. Cuando intentan decir: ‘¿Sabes qué? Realmente es una sola película con un entreacto’. Así que queremos que cada una se mantenga por sí misma. La próxima comenzará donde terminó la anterior, pero al igual que Avatar quedaba resuelta y no parecía una mera preparación para otra película, nadie quiere que Avatar 2 parezca una preparación para Avatar 3«.
Por último, se confirman las sospechas de que tanto la producción de El Santuario como la reciente aventura de Cameron en la Fosa de las Marianas iban a desembocar en un Avatar 2 más acuático. Landau ha comentado que el director ya se ha puesto en contacto con la compañía de efectos digitales neozelandesa Weta Digital para desarrollar un sistema de captura de movimientos subacuático que permitirá dotar de vida a los océanos de Pandora. Aunque eso no quiere decir que toda la película vaya a desarrollarse bajo el agua, como el propio productor ha explicado:
«Va a ser como con las Montañas Flotantes de la primera película. No va a ser todo bajo el agua; será un sitio al que tengan que ir, regresar y volver a ir«.
