Hace ya 15 años que Seven pasó por la gran pantalla y aún sigue resonando el eco que dejó este film en el proyector. La cinta narra la investigación policial sobre un asesino en serie que elige a sus víctimas para recrear cada uno de los siete pecados capitales que narra el Antiguo Testamento. Sin embargo, la propuesta dramática de su director David Fincher (The Game, Fight Club, Zodiac) llega mucho más lejos; nos refleja la ideología y el punto de vista de una persona «demente»; John Doe (Kevin Spacey), un asesino anónimo que justifica sus crímenes bajo el pretexto de «abrir los ojos» a una sociedad que vive ajena al daño que se está causando a sí misma. Esta premisa sirve como mensaje para invitar a reflexionar al espectador sobre los pecados de la sociedad actual.
El contrapunto entre el bien y el mal, entre lo correcto y lo incorrecto se desarrolla continuamente a lo largo de la película, sirviendo como base para que ésta avance.
Los personajes de los detectives David Mills y William Somerset están construidos siguiendo el patrón del cine negro americano de los años 40 y 50, a lo que le añadimos dos brillantes interpretaciones por parte de Brad Pitt y Morgan Freeman que añaden sus propios matices, produciendo unos personajes muy humanos, cercanos y creíbles para las escenas del film. Brad representa la juventud, la precocidad, la inocencia y la perspicacia, mientras que Freeman la madurez, la sabiduría, la experiencia y la torpeza. Ambos personajes se complementan y avanzan en la trama gracias al duelo psicológico que les ofrece el asesino.
La joven mujer del detective Mills, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow) es lo único «malo» del film, ya que su interpretación pasa muy desapercibida y solo sirve como catalizador para el giro final del guión.Se dice que en el cine ya está todo contado y que tan solo importa la forma en que lo cuentes, pues Seven es de esas pocas películas que consigue hacerlo patente. La fotografía y la puesta en escena están cuidados al máximo para envolver a la ciudad de una atmósfera fría, contaminada y claustrofóbica, el montaje es ágil y sorprendente (tanto que fue nominado al Oscar) y cuenta con una serie de inquietantes fotogramas subliminales (un pequeño sello de identidad de las películas de Fincher) y sigue al pie de la letra aquello de «sugerir en lugar de mostrar».
El tiempo ha engrandecido a esta película (como si de un buen vino se tratase), su metraje ha servido de referencia para películas como la saga Saw, The Bone Collector, Taking Lives, Horsemen y series de la televisión americana como la infumable CSI o Criminal Minds, Bones, Dexter, etc… y aún así, hasta la fecha ningún otro filme ha conseguido el impacto visual que supuso y supone Seven para su género.
