El director Peter Jackson galardonado con un Oscar, fue nombrado Caballero de la Orden de Mérito de su país de origen, Nueva Zelanda. Al parecer, ya se sabía la noticia desde finales del año pasado, cuando John Key, primer ministro del país restaurara los honores abolidos por el gobierno laborista.

Fue Anand Satyanand, gobernador de Nueva Zelanda, el que presidió la ceremonia en representación de la reina Isabel II. Todo esto durante un importante acto donde se hizo el famoso gesto de tocar con la espada al nuevo caballero, arrodillado, en cada hombro.

Según palabras de Jackson: «Me siento muy honrado (…), hacer películas no es un esfuerzo individual sino de cientos, miles de personas, me siento como si estuviera aceptando este honor en nombre de una industria enorme». Para el autor de The Lovely Bones, ser nombrado Caballero no es lo mismo que ganar una estatuilla de la Academia de Hollywood, ya que esto tiene un aspecto más tradicional y solemne.

Peter Jackson, de 48 años, ha sido un impresionante elemento publicitario de su bella tierra al rodar allí la trilogía de El Señor de los Anillos, y en la que próximamente, si las cosas van como deben ir y se da la definitiva luz verde al proyecto, se rodará también The Hobbit, basada en el libro de J.J.R. Tolkien, narrando el encuentro del anillo de poder por parte de Bilbo Bolson. Recordemos que el proyecto está en manos de Guillermo del Toro, y que Jackson sólo hará el papel de productor. Tienen previsto empezar a rodar a lo largo de este mismo año.
